No Child Should Have to Grow Up in Poverty.

Champions for Kids works to alleviate child poverty and homelessness — so that all children are healthy and prepared for success in life. Over 31 million children are living at-risk -- their basic living, nutrition, and education needs are not met. This means that children in every community go to school without the resources they need to thrive.

Champions for Kids believes everyone wants to give Kids a Bear Hug. Every time we provide children in poverty with meals that matter, celebrate their birthdays, send home personal care packs and help children with every day needs, these contributions matter to kids.

I remember the morning well. Snow was falling. It was two weeks before Christmas. My phone rang...

A woman on the other end was nervous. "Mrs. Schaeffer? You don't know me, but I am a social worker at Fayetteville High School. We have a student who is in need of support. School is closing for the holidays. We need to find a place where he can stay. Someone said that if we called you, maybe you could help."

My husband and I went to the high school that afternoon. When we walked in, Daniel was waiting for us. Everything he owned was in a red back pack. He greeted us with a hug, "Mr. and Mrs. Schaeffer, my name is Daniel."

Daniel came to live with us for two years. Once he graduated from high school, he went on to learn life skills and become independent. We are so proud of Daniel and his continued progress in life!
